Weekend whittler at Waiting for Spring
Melissa lives and breathes design, honing her talent over fifteen years as Creative Director for some of Australia’s best known lifestyle magazines, including Australian House & Garden, Prevention and Notebook. Her passion for publishing began during her time producing books as brand extensions for magazine brands including delicious., Gardening Australia, Interiors and Country Style.
Since founding King Street Press, in 2014, she has overseen its expansion into brand creation, web design, graphic design, retail packaging and signage and publishing services for clients.
In everything she does, Melissa’s goal is to help small businesses prosper. For start-ups, sole-traders, entrepreneurs and authors, Melissa knows just how valuable good design can be.
After making a sea-change to South Coast NSW from Inner-West Sydney in 2019, Melissa rediscovered the joy and well-being benefits of being in nature through daily outdoor adventures in her new neighbourhood. After the trauma of bushfires, floods and Covid, she wanted to help others find peace and calm in nature, and launched a side venture, Rewilding Life using her graphic design, illustration and publishing skills to create self-guided maps and books to mindfully explore nature.
Her latest book Rewilding Kids Australia, was published in 2022 by Hardie Grant Books, and has found its way into the hands of kids all over Australia.
When not working on King Street Press commissions and Rewilding Life projects, you'll find Melissa in her happy place – nature, recording her adventures by drawing and taking photos.
Rachel is the ultimate multi-hyphenate, a graphic designer, slash brand strategist, slash interior architect who began her career in the film industry.
Prior to joining King Street Press, Rachel ran her own Interior Design business, Nook Creative, that remodelled multi-million-dollar properties in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Earlier she was part of the award-winning team at Coop Creative, creating beautiful spaces for private and public clients and was part of the rebrand of the McDonalds chain of restaurants.
To create compelling brand identities for her clients, Rachel draws on her unique combination of design savvy, commercial understanding and technical expertise, and follows the principles of User Experience Design.
As a maker, Rachel creates pieces for the home, screen printing her own patterns onto linen fabric and turning it into cushions, tea towels and wall hangings. More recently she’s become obsessed with wood carving making stylish Mid-Century/Scandi-style inspired pieces that feel beautiful to touch, and smell of the raw timbers they're made from. Just like swimming laps at the pool or walking in nature, carving is pure meditation in motion and at the end of each day, she can't wait to put down the computer mouse, pick up a knife and get whittling.
